Answ2. The South Island is dominated structurally by the Alpine Fault, which has historically raised the sedimentary greywackes about 20 km. This has been reduced by erosion to about 3 km. Resulting in large alluvial plainlands.

South of the Canterbury area, the landform is dominated by the Waipounamu Erosion Surface (Miocene) and this is currently being compressed by (very roughly) E-W forces. This is raising in a plastic mode, a series of smoothly-rounded mountain blocks about 1000m high.

In the North Island, there is some continuation of the SI greywacke, but the Taupo Volcanic Zone really dominates the scene. This zone has in the past been the site of the world's largest known volcanic explosion, with ejecta of over 1200 cubic kilometres on occasion. A recent eruption (c181 CE) is recorded in Chinese and Roman records, and ejected about 120 cubic kilometres of ash. Present landforms resulting from these ash showers have produced large areas of fertile downlands and plains.
