The nine types are:

Nuclear family: The traditional family. What most people think of while picturing a family.
Male + Female parents, one or more children, pet etc...
(For example The Simpsons)

Extended family: All relatives that are not in the immediate family.
(For example Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, etc...)

Lone parent family: A father or mother that has chosen to be a single parent
IMPORTANT: Lone parents are NOT the same as Single parents.
(For example a mother whom has divorced her husband and gained custody of the child)

Single parent family: A single father or mother that does not have the choice to live with the other parent.
IMPORTANT: Single parents are NOT the same as Lone parents.
(For example a woman got pregnant out of wedlock and the father does not want to live with her)

Childless family: Any family without children.
(For example two gay men* are married and living together without kids)
*note: not restricted to gay men

Blended family: A family including of any of the other children of one or both parents' past relationships.
Term for family including step relatives.
(For example a married couple in which the husband has been married before, and had kids with his previous wife. Those kids, their father, plus his new wife (and potentially any of their kids) are defined as blended family)

Common law family: Two partners that have been living together for a large period of time. In some parts of the world they

can be legally considered married.
(For example a couple has been living together for 3 years. They are considered common law family)

Family of choice: A group of people* to which one has a close affinity with.
Think of close friends.


(For example the show How I Met Your Mother. All the main characters are family of choice because they are such close friends)
*note: the relationships with these people does not have to be romantic in nature.
