'The Vampire Diaries' is a series of young adult novels written by LJ Smith and first published in 1991. It centres around Elena Gilbert. a 17 year old, popular school girl and she meets the mysterious Stefan Salvatore, who is a vampire, and he has a brother called Damon, who's also a vampire.

The TV show, which is loosely based on the books premiered on The CW on September 10, 2009 and stars Paul Wesley as Stefan, Nina Dobrev as Elena and Ian Somerhalder as Damon. However, a lot has been changed from the books.

The first book in the Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith contains two volumes called The Awakening and The Struggle. It's an extremely well-written book in my opinion. I read it way before the tv series came out and I must say the show does not even compare with the books.
The Awakening: The main character in the saga is Elena Gilbert, a girl who gets anything she wants, including boys. Except one. When Elena sets her eyes on the mysterious, new student, Stefan Salvatore, it becomes her goal to make him hers or die. Stefan falls instantly for Elena, but he has a secret. (Well, actually many, lik being a vampire, but you will have to read the book to find out more!) Stefan also has a brother, Damon who likes Elena, initially, for the same reason as his brother. And to complicate things even more, Elena like Damon as well.
The Struggle: (There isn't much I can say about this installment without spoiling the first part so, SPOILER ALERT!) It picks up right where the first one ends, with Stefan missin, Damon uncooperative, and Elena helpless. Throughout the book, Elena searches for Stefan. The ending is somewhat of a twist; she ends up dead.

The TV show centres on Elena Gilbert, a 17 year old high school student who lost her parents in a car crash prior to the events of the 'Pilot' episode. She has a 15 year old brother named Jeremy, who abuses drugs as a means of coping with their parents' deaths. Their aunt Jenna acts as their legal guardian.

On the first day back at Mystic Falls High, she encounters a mysterious stranger and they can't keep their eyes off each other. They later meet again at the cemetery and he returns her journal to her that evening. She invites him to the Mystic Grill where he meets her friends Matt, Caroline and Bonnie.

Stefan tells her that he doesn't have any siblings that he talks to and she is later confused by his behaviour at the party by the Falls. Vicki, Matt's sister, is attacked by an unknown entity but Stefan later discovers that his older brother, Damon, has return and promises to make his life a misery.

Elena later discovers that both brothers are 145 year old vampires. While scared at first, Stefan tells her what happened and she eventually accepts them.

it is practicly about a girl(Elena) and a vampire(Stefan) who fall in love with each other , but get disturbed by Stefan's vampire brother (Damon). A lot of deaths happen and they have to struggle through a lot of things, like the ex- girlfriend of the two vampires (Katherin), a mad fox kitsune and different stuff I will not mention now. Also one of Elena's best friend (Bonnie) is a witch. a lot of cool stuff happens and a lot of confussing stuff... but it's perfect and wonderfull...

elena is going to be a vampire and damon might or might not leave( because she choose stefen and he and stefen had a deal) considering she will be turning into a vampire she will remember how she really meet damon first and the time he first told her he loved her. so then again she might change her mind and stefen might leave. although i don't think either of them will be leaving her at a time like this.
