There is no right or wrong qualification to become a politician. Current New Zealand politicians have qualifications that range between Medicine, Resource Management, zoology, Political Science, Teaching and Economics.
The best qualification is a passion for a particular area of politics e.g. health, education, poverty, job creation, economy. Read about this area to gain as much knowledge as you can. This will make you a valuable member of your parties caucus (MP's of a particular party who are in parliament).

- Leader of one of the major parties (National or Labour); to do this you have to be elected by your caucus (fellow MPs) as leader;
- Your party must have a majority of seats in parliament (currently 62 out of 122);
- Or, in coalition (agreement) with other parties in parliament to give you a majority.
John Key became Prime Minister in 2008 because, following the election, the National Party plus Act, UnitedFuture and the Maori Party had a majority.
