The French and English both laid claim to the Ohio Valley region. Though the English colonists (mostly Pennsylvania and Virginia) claimed it, the French were the first to really move in and settle and make trade with the Indians. This alarmed the British. The race to fortify the Ohio Valley was on for both the French and English. The Ohio Valley region was also the middle region between two major French colonial regions: Quebec and the Mississippi. A string of forts was built from Lake Erie to the Fork of the Ohio River (modern day Pittsburgh) in 1753 to maintain open communication between the two regions, to maintain trade with the Indians, and to drive the English from the Ohio Valley. The French forts include Fort Presque Isle, Fort Le Boeuf, Fort Machault, Fort Vernango, and Fort Dusquesne. Fort Dusquesne was built after the French tore down the existing English fort.
The French were also interested in trading with the Indians unlike the English who wanted to settle the land.
