Precedents and precursors, contemporaneity, and consequences are three approaches to Italian unification.

Specifically, the term designates what is called Risorgimento ("Resurgence") in Italian. It identifies the 19th-century socio-political movement which culminated in the formation of the Kingdom of Italy from the diverse states populating the Italian peninsula. Some scholars live in the past in terms of working backwards from the movement to its causes, influences and inspirations whereas others live in the present by comparing and contrasting parallel movements elsewhere in the world and still others live in the future by analyzing the movement's achievements and impacts.
