In the 1830s the Indians were moved farther west and settlers began to come over; Kansas had few trees and large flat plains perfect for farming.
The population increase mostly happened during and after the American Civil war with the introduction of the Homestead Act. The act allowed up to 160 acres of free land for the settlers, all they needed to do was pay a filling fee and live on the property for more than five years and they could acquire the deed.
This was amended after the Civil war to just one year of residency for soldiers causing another great influx of settlers. this law remained through the century; and by the 1880s the population increased from 100 000 to 1 million.

The Exodusters were black African Americans who formed their own independent communities in the west because they believed the west would prove their promise land. Kansas seemed like the "ideal" place for blacks because that is where the sought peace unlike the south where there was the cruelty of the black codes, the cruelness of the sharecroppers and the Klu Klux Klan.
