There are, of course, innumerable sounds and bays in the Canadian maritimes, however, in addition to the Atlantic Ocean itself, the two most notable bodies of water are the Bay of Fundy and the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Most of Nova Scotia is a peninsula, connected with New Brunswick and the rest of mainland Canada by the Chignecto Isthmus. The isthmus, which separates the Northumberland Strait from the Bay of Fundy, measures only 24 kilometres wide at its narrowest point; its highest elevation is a mere 12 meters.
Two small rivers flow through the isthmus: the Tidnish, which flows into Baie Verte, and the Missaguash. Only a short portion of the Tidnish forms part of the Nova Scotia border with New Brunswick. The Missaguash River's source is the Missaguash Bog. The Missaguash flows through the Tantramar Marshes and then into Cumberland Basin. Throughout its length, the Missaguash forms part of the border with New Brunswick.
Except for the survey line portion of the isthmus, Nova Scotia is surrounded by water: the two small rivers running through the isthmus and the Atlantic Ocean.
Major portions of Nova Scotia's Atlantic shoreline include, clockwise, Baie Verte, Northumberland Strait, St George's Bay, Gulf of St Lawrence, Cabot Strait, Chedabucto Bay, Gulf of Maine, St Mary's Bay, Annapolis Basin, Bay of Fundy, Chignecto Bay, and Cumberland Basin. Dozens of smaller bays and indentations dot the Nova Scotia shoreline, especially along the southeastern and southern shores.
Mainland Nova Scotia was separated from Cape Breton Island by the Strait of Canso until 1955. Construction of the Canso Causeway was begun on September 16, 1952. The first passenger train crossed the causeway on May 14, 1955 and motor vehicles began crossing on May 20, 1955.
