the food is freeze dried at extreme temperatures and then sealed into a special foil packet NASA or other space agencies then supply the missions with enough food to last the trip and extra if you get stranded.

the food when you eat it tastes similar to those that you would eat on earth it is like a powder substance and the saliva in your mouth melts the powder turning it into the real deal. while there is no gravity in space it doesn't matter as you don't open your mouth when chewing

They don't lay it out on a plate. Most everything packed for consumption in

zero-gravity is in squeeze-bottles and bags, and an important part of every

astronaut's training is to learn to hold onto the bag between squeezes, so

that it doesn't drift away while you're chewing or resting between squeezes.

So far, little food has been produced in space. Astronauts take their food with them, from Earth. Of course, it is possible that in the future, astronauts will have a more serious interest in producing food in space. Hydroponic gardens would be a likely strategy.

Possibly place it in a containment area of the space station where the food stays fresh. This usually requires chemicals to some extent. Freeze-drying food and rehydrating it before consumption has also been an effective technique in keeping food edible for long periods of time.
