The British and French were fighting over the colonies, with the British defending their colonies and the French trying to gain more. In the end the French lost all their holdings in Canada, and some holdings in the Carribean.
Basically France and Britain both claimed the Ohio River Valley. France started to move troops and build forts in the area. Britain wanted them out and sent a young George Washington as an emissary. When they wouldn't leave, Washington was sent a few months later to build a fort on the Monongahela river. While he was on the way there, the colonials and some Indian allies ambushed a French diplomatic party, killing its commander. This led the French to take revenge, capturing the colonial fort (Ft. Necessity) and beginning the French and Indian war.
