Brock had an excellent military background and built up Canadian defenses before the war started. When war did start he assembled the best troops and responded to the American invasion of Windsor by driving off the invaders and attacking and taking Fort Detroit from the larger defending American force.

This rallied those defending Canada but Brock would be killed shortly after at Queenston Heights. His major contributions including giving Canada good defenses and an example of proper military defensive actions.

The taking of Fort Detroit was done with the help of Tecumseh.

Tecumseh survived for much longer and as a result contributed more. Fighting with Brock he had about 1,000 troops but they were not the trained and loyal troops like the Red Coats. Indian troops were difficult to control, prone to massacring innocents and prisoners, and generally unreliable. Tecumseh helped address all those short comings.

But those short comings would lead to his death in the fall of 1813 when most of his troops left or fled during maneuvers leading up to the battle at Moraviantown.

Without the contributions of these two people the war of 1812 may have had a very different outcome. As it was we can safely say they helped defend Canada and defeat the Americans.
