The Right Honourable Stephen Harper P.C., M.P. (Calgary-Southwest), the Prime Minister, was responsible for the enactment of amendments to the Canada Elections Act that prescribed fixed election dates for Canadian general elections. The Act sets out that a general election must take place on the third Monday in October, in the fourth calendar year following the previous general election.

This means that the next general election must take place by October 19, 2015.

(It should be noted that the fixed dates set out in the Canada Elections Act do not restrict the authority of the Governor General of Canada, on the advice of the prime minister, to dissolve the Parliament of Canada and call elections earlier than the date prescribed in the Act.)
