For the northern hemisphere that would be June the 21. June the 21 is the longest day from dawn to dusk and since there is only 24hr in a day it is logical that the evening of the 21st would be the shortest.

The shortest night of the year happens on the Summer Solstice. The Summer Solstice's date differs each year and also differs depending on which hemisphere you are in. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, then the Summer Solstice happens around June 21st (give or take a few days). If you are in the Southern Hemisphere, then the Summer Solstice happens around December 21st (give or take a few days).

The Summer Solstice is the day when the Sun's rays are directly situated on the Tropic of Cancer or the Tropic of Capricorn (depending on which hemisphere you're in). It also kicks off the start of Summer. The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year, meaning it is also the shortest night of the year.

The Winter Solstice has the same logic, although just the opposite. Meaning June 21st (give or take a few days) is the Winter Solstice for the Southern Hemisphere while December 21st (give or take a few days) is the Winter Solstice for the Northern Hemisphere. It also kicks off the start for Winter. The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year, meaning it also has the longest night of the year.
