Back in the day if you lived in the New Brunswick somerset area and you wanted to get to the ocean the best place along the way was through Old Bridge. It crossed the south river which connects to Duhernal Lake and you can still travel across the bridge today via Old Bridge Turnpike. I have also heard mention the George Washington wrote in his journals about passing across an Old Bridge and hence the name stuck.
