Johnny felt like Dally was his big brother. Dally was always there for Johnny and they shared a brotherly love, not a gay love. When Johnny was stuck in the burning church Dally saved him. When Johnny said he wanted to turn himself into the cops Dally told Johnny not to because he didn't want Johnny to become like him because jail hardened him. He doesn't want Johnny to be cold-hearted and mean like himself.

Dally always viewed Johnny as the gang's pet. He loved johnny and saw him as the most important person in the gang. However, he thought Johnny was too shy and timid and caring so he felt Johnny was going to get hurt more than anyone. He looked after Johnny and threatened anyone who made fun of him or hurt him. When Johnny died, Dally felt they couldn't get along without him and he wished anyone else in the gang had died instead of Johnny. Johnny was the only thing Dally loved and when he died, he purposely killed himself.

They are both sort of reckless and don't particularly follow the rules. Dally is older so he breaks more of the rules, but Johnny closely follows in his foot steps.

Grim triumph is what Dally shows as an expression towards Johnny's death. The only thing Dally loved was Johnny. He always protected him, epecially when Johnny had killed Bob, and He risked his life to help Johnny. That is why Johnny's death created the unhapiness of Dally.
