The conditions for the crew were almost as bad as the slave's conditions and the death rate was just as high! Crew were beaten, whipped, chained, denied food, shot and even stabbed! It was a very dangerous job.

When the ship came they were loaded under the deck and were kept in horrible cramped conditions but they were fed very well so that when they were auctioned for money they were looking healthy.
