Much of what happened across the 1,000,000 square miles of the Great Plains before European explorers arrived is unrecorded and unknown, so there is plenty of scope for argument about who exactly was first to develop (not invent) any particular thing.

Some historians believe that the familiar warbonnet (sometimes called a "sun " bonnet") was developed by the Sioux tribes; others (including myself) insist that it was devised by the Crows and rapidly adopted by many other tribes.

In a society without any kind of technology beyond what was known in the Neolithic period, the term "invention" is really not applicable.
