Hi, let me begin by first breaking down the etymology of the word holiday.Holiday is from the word haliday which was used around the 1500's.Haliday is from the Old English word Haligdæg meaning "holy day; Sabbath,".Halig means "holy" + dæg means "day" Thus Holiday means holyday.Now this was first used by the ancient people of past civilizatioins such as the Sumerians, babylonias, egyptians, and Israelites as a day to worship their gods. in paticular the ancient Israelite where commanded by their GOD to have a Holyday or as we call it to day a Holiday called the sabbath.They had to keep this holyday in remembrance of their God creating the Earth and everything in it in six days and resting on the seventh day. This is where the word holiday if derived i dont know if they can pinpoint the first civilization the started this.
