Captain Smith spent some time on the Titanic bridge and spoke with Second Officer Charles Lightoller about the ice zone, temperature and the like. He then went to bed. Lightoller was relieved by First Officer William Murdoch prior to the fateful encounter with the iceberg.
When the Titanic was sinking, they called another ship to help them. The captain of this ship did not believe them, so he went back to bed. A few hours later, the captain of the other boat got another phone call, so he believed it. If he had listened the first time, then they would be there in time for them to save the Titanic. But since they did not believe, they were too far away and they said that they would be there in another, 4 or 5 hours. That was too long, and the Titanic was sinking. So they just sent people out on life boats.

Some reports indicate that the radio operator on the Californian had turned his radio off after having received a rude complaint from the Titanic radio operator. The Titanic radio operator had complained that the frequent iceberg warnings from the Californian were interfering with him sending personal radio messages from the Titanic passengers.
It has never been fully explained, but at the enquiry it was established that the Californian's officers saw distress rockets but no-one on board treated them seriously. The Californian had a wireless telegraphy set and an operator, but a single operator could not keep watch 24 hours per day and the Californian's operator was in bed. The Captain was also in bed and it didn't occur to anyone to wake up the wireless operator, so they missed the whole thing.
After the Captian went to bed second officer Charles Lightoller was in control and he was relieved by First officer Murdoch who was in command when Titanic hit the iceburg.
