Audience attire is casual, preferably in good taste, according to the New York City Forum on Dress Code for 'Wicked' or any Broadway Play. Theatre goers usually combine dinner and the play in their outing. So please keep in mind where you want to eat, and dress accordingly.

Depends what kind of play it is or where it is located. Obviously if it's high-end like Broadway, you might want to dress up a bit maybe a nice dress or skirt and blouse with a bit of heel. If it is more casual, like say a high school musical production then maybe jeans or pants and a nice top.
It also depends on the weather, maybe adding leggings or tights of a nice scarf is always a nice touch. When in doubt, go-to items such as blazers, cardigans, Ballet flats and nice jewelry can do wonders.
For the men it is similar, a polo or button down shirt with nice pants or jeans will always do the trick.
Hope this helps!

There are many straight guys who love musicals and there are many gay men who hate them. These are silly stereotypes which have nothing to do with sexual orientation.

Some of the highest grossing musicals on Broadway include The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Mamma Mia and Beauty and the Beast. They all had long and lucrative runs.
They remain popular because, there are always interesting musicals out there and people want to see the musicals. Also, there are commercials that show portions of musicals, for example "Wicked." They think that that one clip from the show on the commercial looks interesting or something they want to see, so they go. And then if they like it they will tell family and friends about it so then they go to see it, then they tell people, then those people who are told go, and so on!

The characters are the same. Wicked's about Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda before Dorothy's house dropped in. You only see Dorothy's silhouette in Wicked. Also, Wicked is centered around the friendship of the Wicked Witch (Elphaba) and Glinda.
