They remain popular because, there are always interesting musicals out there and people want to see the musicals. Also, there are commercials that show portions of musicals, for example "Wicked." They think that that one clip from the show on the commercial looks interesting or something they want to see, so they go. And then if they like it they will tell family and friends about it so then they go to see it, then they tell people, then those people who are told go, and so on!
