When early Egyptians, Greeks, and others came and approached the inhabitants of present-day Somalia, someone among themselves would utter the word " soo maal" which in fact, meant "milk the domestic animal" in order to present fresh milk to the visitors. The Somalis even today have retained this most ancient tradition of providing hospitality to all their guests by presenting to them the fresh milk of their animals.

So, to the foreigners, Somali people were known as the "Soo maal", who later become the "Somali", and Somalia was named after these people.
