It is possible that what you saw was, what we class as space junk; IE :- old satellite's, parts of old rockets, equipment that has been lost during missions. Maybe a couple of these collided, maybe one had unspent fuel and exploded and then entered the atmosphere.
A second scenario is that maybe a meteor skipped on the earths atmosphere, a bit like a pebble does on water, this would give the impression of a very bright star and then fading as it left. Part of it may have broken off and returned to the atmosphere, and given you your "shooting star".
