A weak source of Americium-241 is found in smoke detectors. The Alpha particles, which ionise the air, are emitted from here. This causes the air to conduct electricity and a small current flows.
No he doesn't. He works/worked as the creator of the Simpson's. Why do you think he works at a nuclear power plant?
There are a number of reasons that radiation detection is important. The primary one has to do with exposure to radiation by radiation workers and others. If we have the proper detection equipment and use it appropriately, we know what's going on radiation wise and can plan accordingly. That will allow us to keep folks from getting zapped excessively, and that's very important to everyone concerned. It's for sure that we need radiation detectors around nuclear reactors to aid in early warnings that something is wrong. Any place that works with nuclear materials better have detectors operating. We also use radiation detection equipment to find "hot spots" and locate things we need to get bagged and tagged. There are still some sites where some radioactive materials have gotten "loose" and need to be recovered. In the lab, we need to identify different types of radiation and the energies associated with it, and this will let us identify which radioisotopes are emitting the radiation. This is good stuff to know if an investigator is attempting to find out what materials or substances are in a sample. There are a number of other uses for radiation detection equipment, but the primary ones have to do with protecting people who work with radioactive materials, and with having detectors at entrances and exits to nuclear facilities to prevent nuclear materials from coming in or going out. As an aside, but directly related, a worker in a facility that had nuclear materials in it set off detectors when he was coming in to work. These detectors were working properly, and it was determined in follow up investigations that the individual was being exposed to radon at home! It was a nice catch by the nuclear monitoring team.

Mr. Burns is the owner of the nuclear power plant in which Homer works. He is often refered to as "Burns" and is very rich and cruel
drake the rapper doesn't smoke he may smoke occasionally in social gatherings maybe to fit in or something but drake hold his voice dear and wants to maintain it although i find it dumb to smoke to fit in
Most smoke detectors which operate alarms contain an artificially produced radioisotope: americium-241 in the form of americium dioxide. Americium-241 is made in nuclear reactors, and is a decay product of plutonium-241. It emits mostly alpha particles and relatively little harmful gamma radiation. The amount of americium in a typical new smoke detector is 1 microcurie or about 0.29 micrograms. The smoke detector works by using the americium as a source of ionizing radiation to ionize the air in an ionization chamber between two electrodes. The slightly ionized air allows a small current to be conducted between the two electrodes. When smoke enters the chamber, it absorbs some of the ionizing radiation, reducing or eliminating the current and triggering the alarm.
Actually they are smoke detectors, they detect the result of the fire, smoke. A smoke detector works as follows: There is a chamber with a small nuclear source in it. Smoke particles are hit by the radiation and are ionized, ie, an electron is knocked off the particle leaving the particle with a charge on it. The chamber has two parallel plates in it with a voltage across the plates. The ionized particles are attracted to one of the plates, causing an electric current to flow. This current is amplified and detected and sets off the alarm.
Radiologists work with these.
How does a rain detector works
The battery in a smoke detector should last a year (though the detector should be checked monthly). The detector works on "trickle" current that is always there. NiCads will lose more current than an alkaline battery from just sitting around - much more. Even a fully charged NiCad will usually not last a year in a smoke detector. Alkaline batteries will easily.

If the battery dies the smoke detector sill works, that the biggest advantage to using hard wire.

Piezoelectric infrared radiation detectors made of triglycine sulfate can convert infrared radiation into detectable electrical signals. When infrared radiation hits the crystal structure of the triglycine sulfate, it creates an electric charge due to the piezoelectric effect, which can then be measured as a voltage signal. This allows the detector to sense and quantify the presence of infrared radiation.

An EMF detector is a device that measures electromagnetic fields. It works by detecting the presence of electromagnetic radiation in the surrounding area. The detector uses sensors to pick up on the strength and frequency of the electromagnetic fields, providing a reading that indicates the level of exposure to these fields.
An EMF detector is used to measure and detect electromagnetic fields. It helps in identifying sources of electromagnetic radiation, such as electrical wiring, appliances, or electronic devices. The detector works by picking up changes in the electromagnetic field strength and alerting the user to potential sources of EMF exposure.
