It wasn't originally inspired by it, but it just happened to go that way. When the production begun, they had no idea what the story would be about as the movie was about lions, and the story developed from scratch. The production team started to notice it has Hamlet-like story elements when they agreed to make Scar, who was originally a rogue lion who kills Mufasa like in the final film, Simba's uncle and decided to have more of them there. This information is from The Lion King Platinum Edition DVD release's Disc 2 bonus feature, Story Origins.
the differences are many like in the end of hamlet everybody dies except for the king of Norway and in the lion king not everybody dies and there is no other king, in hamlet Claudius is in love with Gertrude and in the lion king scar doesn't love Sarabi. many other differences exist but if you read the book hamlet and watch the movie the lion king you can see many yourself
The plot of The Lion King is based on Hamlet, and so is Lion King 2 based on Romeo and Juliet ;)
Actually, although the plot of The Lion King is said to be based on Hamlet, it doesn't have very much in common with it. We have a king who is murdered by his brother, who usurps the throne, and is avenged by his son. This is a very common type of plot. Shakespeare used it more than once. In Macbeth we have a king who is murdered by his cousin, who usurps the throne, and is avenged by his son. In Richard III we have a king who is murdered by his brother, who usurps the throne, and is avenged by a distant relative. The pathetic fallacy that the kingdom actually decays under the rule of the usurper is present in all three of these plays (and the Lion King).
What else about the Lion King may be similar to Hamlet? There is a foolish counsellor, who does not get killed by the Prince. The Prince has a girlfriend, who does not suffer grief for the death of her father, become insane or die. She doesn't have a brother either. There is a sort of ghost thing in the sky.
In Hamlet, one of the characteristics of the story in all its incarnations is that the Prince is forced to remain in the court of his usurping uncle. He is forced to adopt a pose of craziness to make himself appear harmless. There is none of this in The Lion King. In fact the idea that the Prince flees believing himself to be a suspect in his father's murder is right out of Macbeth.
In Hamlet the Prince dies in accomplishing his revenge. Not in The Lion King. Again, it's more like Macbeth.
In Hamlet the Prince has one special pal who is stable, logical and cool. In The Lion King he has two friends who are Abbott and Costello. The Prince's mother marries the uncle willingly in Hamlet; in The Lion King she is enslaved. In Hamlet the Prince only accomplishes his revenge at the last minute and without planning; in The Lion King he and his sidekicks have a sneaky plan to get into the castle (sort of like disguising themselves as Birnam Wood) to effect the revenge.
In fact the more you think about it the less like Hamlet the Lion King seems. It's at least as similar to Macbeth, and probably more.
The differences between Scar in The Lion King and King Claudius in Hamlet are:
The Lyin' King
The Lion King
It is largely based on Shakespeare's Hamlet.
The outsider archetype in The Lion King is mostly likely Scar as his character are archetypes of King Claudius in Hamlet and the title character in Richard III.
Yes. Simba (Hamlet) is the son of Mufasa (King Hamlet,) who was killed by his brother, Scar (Claudius) Simba, in the end, gets rid of scar and becomes king (in the play, Hamlet killed his uncle, and also died himself. (The Lion King is a Disney movie, and that would be a horrible ending for a Disney movie).A list of Lion King-Hamlet character allusions: Sarabi (Gertrude), Timon & Pumbaa (Rosencrantz and Guilderstern), and Nala (Ophelia). Zazu is possibly representative of Polonius, and the hyenas could be Laertes though it is here that the Shakespeare allusions become more ambiguous.

That's easy The Lion King was influenced by Hamlet by William Shakespeare!
no its based of Shakespeare's hamlet, and an African Tale

I can tell you that the Lion King is based off of Hamlet.
Disney based the Lion King loosely around the plot of Hamlet- missing some vital plot points nevertheless.
No, "The Lion King" is not based on "The Chronicles of Narnia" by C. S. Lewis. "The Lion King" is a Disney animated film that was inspired by the Shakespearean play "Hamlet" and African folklore.
