Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March live in a poor, small house in Concord Massachusetts. Their father, once wealthy, went to fight in the Civil War to support the family, and their mother helps support the army by making clothes. Each girl fights an issue with themselves, and by experimenting with all their surrounding environment, try and settle these problems, such as Amy and Meg's problems of being impoverished, Jo's with her temper, and Beth's with her shyness. Their mother and father only with kind support encourage their little women to be good.

The March family is very poor, as explained in the book, because Mr. March's selfless act of paying off a friend's deep debt. Meg suffers of low self-esteem, complaining she is poor and her clothes are ugly. Jo struggles with her temper, often getting her in fierce tangles with Amy and Meg. Beth, who loves playing her piano, cats and dolls, does not think of the family's poverty all the time, but tries not to be shy all the time. Amy, like Meg, hates being poor. She thinks her nose is too flat and struggles with tempers. Amy often fights with Jo, and is spoiled. Although with these differences, the girls try to make use of their talents through the harsh times of their lives. The climax of Little Women is more than likely the moment when Laurie proposes marriage to Jo, and still after all the vicissitudes that Jo went through found the courage to decline the marriage proposal. What this did was to instill in her a sense of self as a woman and as an independent person and was a move that nobody saw coming, maybe not even Jo.
