Negro spiritual music is directly responsible for the blues, gospel, jazz and rock and roll and r&b. The cultural impact of these styles of derivitive music can hardly be expressed in anything short of a thousand pages. Almost all music on the radio today in North America is a direct result of the musical tradition found in spirituals.

Spirituals have proven to be extremely effective tools to bring people together, and it was this unity that helped slavery fall and civil rights succeeded. Most protest songs are also derivitive of spirituals as well, in terms of style, lyrical choice and structure.
