The first got together in 1x02. They broke up in 1x06, and in 1x10 Elena told Stefan she loved him and they had sex for the first time. Then she found Katherine's picture in his room and left, hurt and angry. In 1x11 he explained himself and they got back together.
In 2x04 they had a fake brake up in order to get Katherine off their tales, but still were together. In 2x06 Elena broke up with Stefan after Katherine finding out about their lie and hurting Jenna as a revenge. In 2x07, Stefan and Damon locked Katherine in the tomb, and Stefan thought it was his new chance with Elena, but she said she needed to feel safe first. They got together in 2x11, when Stefan was released from the tomb. He went to see Elena, they kissed, and for now are still together, going strong.

She thought he was acting suspiciously in the previous episode and went to the TV station to investigate, finding a video from June 1953, which showed Joseph Salvatore's body being removed from the boarding house by paramedics and Stefan was seen in the background, as young as he is in present-day Mystic Falls.

∙ 11y agoI wouldn't say Season 4, I'd say the Season 3 Finale towards the end when Elena is at the hospital and Damon barges in asking where she is and Stefan is looking down at Elena's body and his eyes all filled with tears. I don't think Damon knew until Meredith told him what happened to her and then Stefan was next to her body and he was crying or whatever so I think that's when he found out or maybe Meredith told him which wasn't a scene.
