Little Joe is shot in the back in The Deadly Ones. It pretty much happens right at the beginning when Little Joe comes home at night on Cochise. It's one of my favorite episodes. He was also shot in the back and the leg in Bushwhacked, this is another really good episode.
The beautiful Paint Little Joe Cartwright rod was named Cochise.
That was episode #416, season 14, title Forever. But Little Joe had no children.
Little Joe Cartwright always rode a black-and-white pinto named Cochise. There were at least 4 horses from Fat Jones Stables used during the early years, and possibly as many as 12 horses as the series came to an end after 14 seasons (430 episodes).
Episode #232, Season 7, The Fighters, original air date: April 24, 1966.

The Oath
I don't think it was ever revealed how he acquired the horse.
The episode aired in 1963 and was titled Marie, My Love. As with all of the Cartwright women, Little Joe's mother met an untimely death after falling from a horse on the Ponderosa.
This is my favorite episode, #146, original air date Dec. 22, 1963, titled 'Hoss and the Leprechans'.
Hoss Cartwright horse's name was Chub. Ben's horse was Buck, Little Joe's horse was Cochise, and Adam's horse was Sport.
