Vikings visited Canada around 1000 CE. Ruins have been found at L'Ainse aux Meadows in Newfoundland. Basque cod fisherman and whalers had established outposts in the early 1500's. Basque whaling was present in southern Labrador in the mid-1500's. The French had ships exploring the coasts as early as 1525 CE (Giovani de Verrazano) and 1534 CE Jaques cartier was on the first of his three voyages.

Of these events the activities of the Basques most closely meet the specified time frame.
