There had been no investment during the war and parts the country had been badly damaged during the liberation of France. In particular, the transport network needed urgent attention. Initially, the currency was devalued by 50% (!) against the pound, but further devaluations proved inevitable. In short, France was in a mess. Moreover, it had a large Communist Party which caused considerable civil unrest in the spring of 1947. Politically, France was unstable, and until 1958 it was common for the adminstration to change every few months. The problem was made worse by the desperate wars intended to keep Vietnam and Algeria under French rule. Conditions changed when Charles de Gaulle became president in 1958 and the constiution was changed in such a way as to strenghten the powers of the president. In an amazing speech in May 1958 he told the French to obey (!) him - an order that produced several minutes of delirious applause.

The best way to answer this is to contrast the two periods, before the war and after. Before the war there were several great powers - Germany, USA, Britain, Russia/USSR, Japan, Italy and France. All these nations, except Germany, had great imperial empires that dominated less industrialized societies. Germany desired to gain power like Britain and Russia by dominating other cultures and peoples. This of course, was the root cause of WWII. After the war that old order was upset. The rise of 'Super' powers began with the first two being the USA and USSR. After the war they were the only nations on earth with the military and industrial capacity to wage a major war. All the other nations listed above, including the 'winners' France and Britain, were weakened by the war and incabable of major international efforts. The great imperial colonial empires of France and Britain soon began to find independence since the European nations could no longer dominate them. The USA shed formal colonies but expanded its influence to fill the void by making treaties all over the globe, increasing global trade, and setting up military bases in almost every nation on earth outside the Soviet bloc. The Soviets greatly increased their already enormous empire by adding Poland and other east European nations. Due to the collapse of Japanese power in E Asia, they also increased influence in China and surrounding areas. Nuclear weapons made their debut in WWII via the USA. Soon after the British, French and Russians acquired the bomb. The growth in nuclear power among nations has generally prevented all out war as since WWII, no two nuclear powers have fought each other directly. Instead of all out war such as WWII and similar conflicts before then, war became much more local, with many proxy wars such as China helping N Korea and the USA helping in Angola and Afganistan. Thus in summary the major differences in the world before and after the conflict would be 1) political polorization of the globe between the two super powers 2) massive increases in the worlds economic activity due to increased trade 3) avoidance of another all out war due to nuclear weapons 4) end of global dominance by European nations

General De Gaulle became their president. He served as their president for a very long time. The country was able to repair the damage done to their country in their effort to boot the Nazi Germans out of France. Some of the farmers received repayment for the death of their cows and horses. Frenchmen who had escaped the nation returned. The mild damage of Paris was repaired and life went on.

In the Second World War, the Battle of France was the German invasion of France and the Low Countries, executed on 10 May 1940, which ended the Phoney War. The battle consisted of two main operations. In the first, Fall Gelb (Case Yellow), German armoured units pushed through the Ardennes, to cut off and surround the Allied units that had advanced into Belgium. During the fighting, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and many French soldiers were evacuated from Dunkirk in Operation Dynamo
