Shannon, Gibbs wife witnessed a drug deal and reported it. Shannon and Kelly (Gibbs daughter) were in protective custody. The officer that was assigned to protect them was shot while driving the Gibbs van with Shannon and Kelly, they both died in the subsequent crash of the van. All of this occurred before NCIS started and the audience is only given this information through flash backs that Gibbs has in various episodes. Gibbs was in Kuwait as a Marine Gunnery Sergeant assigned to the 1st Marine Sniper Unit.
