The Canadian Legislature is organised into two "houses" The lower house is called the "house of commons" and the upper house "the senate"

Proposed legislation is discussed first in the lower house and on approval sent to the "senate" who also discuss it and approve or send it back to the commons for modification. The proposed legislation must pass both "houses" before it can be entered into the statute book and become the law of the land. The system is based on the British parliamentary method as are most democracies around the world.
