The Sioux were not one tribe but a group of many different related tribes, each with its own customs and traditions.

The Lakotas allowed their hair to grow and usually wore it in long braids hanging down to waist level; some also wore a long braid at the rear, sometimes decorated with feathers, beads and shell. The braids were sometimes wrapped in trade cloth or animal skin.

Some warriors chose to wear their hair unbraided and loose; a few may have shaved part of the head.

All facial hair, including eyebrows, was removed by most native Americans, including men and women of the Sioux tribes.

When in mourning for a dead family member both men and women might cut their hair very short with a knife.
