A school in which you live, also called boarding school. It was very common in Canada for children to go to schools in cities or places too far to travel back and forth from home. Canada had a small population spread too thinly to have schools within reach of all families.
Today the term is usually used in reference to Indian residential schools. These schools were created by Canada after they had "inherited", acquired, purchased lands with large numbers of Aboriginals. Most were living in racially segregated communities which had poor living conditions and little opportunity to integrate into a modern world. Canada felt a moral and legal responsibly to act or help.
That "help" included pulling children out of aboriginal communities and sending them to schools run by those with a European culture and religion. A culture that did not value or respect children as we do today. As a result there was considerable abuse on many levels.
Today Indian residential schools are seen as a major failure of the Canadian racial segregation system which still exists even now in the 21st century. There are still racial segregated schools but now they are operated by those of the same race.
