When a movie is remade, with all previous continuity in the series discarded. If the movie is in a series, the series starts over and all previous films in that series are now to be ignored.
Sometimes this is done when all of the books in a series have already been made into films, but they want to update them with better special effects, pacing, or other reasons. Like the James Bond film series.
Sometime this is done for other reasons. Such as the Spider-Man franchise. They plan to "reboot" the series, and the next film will have all new actors, and will show Peter Parker in high school.
Rebooting can breathe new life into a franchise and clean the slate.
