Cyathea dealbata. The albata part of the name refers to the white nature of the fronds. The overall family Cyatheales it has its main presence in NZ and Australia, but there are a few species found in distant lands. One curiosity is that there appears no overall morphology for identification, but DNA data gathers the various species together.

I used to have several specimens in a North Island property, and their enormous fronds are quite remarkable - up to 5m in length. They are not plants of the deep forest, but do well in the brighter fringes and open scrubland, but below about 1000m.

Ponga or Kaponga are the original Maori names for the New Zealand silver fern.

Where did the all blacks logo come from?

The name it is claimed was coined by a journalist from the south west of the Uk. During a phone call to his editor of the newspaper he worked for in 1905 the journalist claims to have said, "the visitors ran like all backs such was their skills". The editor heard "ALL BLACKS". this was printed and the name stuck. This is an important point as at the time the Team were called the "Originals" for the tour and were not dressed in all black but in shades of green. The logo is the Silver fern, Cyathea dealbata.
