Autogenic succession refers to the natural process of ecological succession driven by the changes in the environment caused by the organisms themselves within an ecosystem. As species populate an area, they modify the habitat—altering soil composition, light availability, and moisture levels—which can facilitate the establishment of other species. This process leads to changes in community structure over time, often resulting in a more complex and stable ecosystem. Autogenic succession contrasts with allogenic succession, where external environmental factors drive the changes in the community.

Succession and diversity are closely related in ecological contexts, as succession refers to the process by which ecosystems change and develop over time, often following a disturbance. During succession, initial species colonize an area, leading to increased biodiversity as more species establish and interact with one another. Over time, this complex interplay can enhance ecosystem resilience and stability. Ultimately, the diversity of species present at various stages of succession influences the overall health and functionality of the ecosystem.
Succession planning is a process which is used in businesses to identify internal people in HR resources. This is also something referred to as replacement planning.

Autogenic means produced from within, or self-generating. Therefore the 'autogenic hypothesis' is most likely to be that the organelles and structures of a Eukaryotic cell were self-generated by a Prokaryotic cell - and this is how Eukaryotic cells were created. The theory of Endosymbiosis is much more widely accepted.

The autogenic theory, which posits that certain bodily processes can be self-regulated through mental techniques, has several weaknesses. One major critique is the lack of robust empirical evidence to support its effectiveness across diverse populations and conditions. Additionally, the theory may overlook the complexities of physiological responses that involve multiple systems and factors beyond individual control. Finally, it can be challenging to measure the subjective experiences associated with autogenic training, making it difficult to standardize and validate the approach.
