"Metropolitan France" consists of the French lands in Europe.

Just as the US has states lying outside the contiguous group of 48, France has Départements outside Europe.

These are the Départements d'Outre-Mer. There are also Territioires d'Outre-mer, in the same way as the US has American Samoa or the US Virgin Islands.

France métropolitaine traduces as 'mainland France'. That includes the isles near mainland France, especially Corsica, but not the overseas departements or possessions in the Carribbean, the Indian ocean, the Pacific...

French living overseas often use the term 'la métropole' to mean mainland France and call the French living on mainland the 'métros'

The Paris Métro is an electric underground railway system; the term metro is also used in other countries to define a rapid transport system, not necessarily underground.

Is metropolitan France different than continental France?

Metropolitan France is France in Europe, including the islands of the Atlantic and those in the Mediterranean. Continental France (that is not a legal definition, but only a way of speaking) is Metropolitan France, minus the parts which are not located on the (European) continent. The large island of Corsica in the Mediterranean is included in Metropolitan France, but left out of Continental France. The French will most often use "Metropolitan France" versus "oversea France" (the French dependencies in the Indian Ocean, in the Caribbean, in south America), but will not use the notion of "Continental France"
