Orientation, when referring to a person's character, means their attitude or adjustment in relation to circumstances. A person's orientation therefore affects how they feel and respond to authority. This means either to their response to an external authority, or to the way they themselves exercise authority.

To orient oneself means to determine where one stands relative to one's environment, physically, mentally and emotionally. A person's ability to orient themselves and the manner and speed of such orientation will ultimately be reflected in behaviour. Numerous behavioral responses to various circumstances are possible, depending upon such factors as perception, knowledge, understanding, insight, ability, experience, motivation, opportunity and personality.
