There really isn't the best, the shotgun is powerful at close range but is limited to longer ranges, the snipers are good for long distances but if you're being attacked at close range it won't do very good, the melee weapons are very powerful but it's only for close range, the assault rifles are very good for long to close ranges, but if you're not careful you could run out of ammo fast. It just depends on what suits you the best.

It is merely an opinion on which is better but Left 4 dead 2 has much more things to do compared to the first one. It also includes 3 more special infected, the "Spitter", the "Charger", and the "Jockey". The online multiplayer is also much more improved with an updated "Director A.I." system to generate a different experience according to your play strategy. If I were to make the decision, I'd say get Left 4 Dead 2. You can get Left 4 Dead 1 some other time.
