It is this kind of nonsense that is keeping whole nations from making things better for the citizenry. The small thinking and the greed demonstrated by individuals and groups is often supported by other nations who find that there is profit in supporting a narrow power faction that will deliver raw materials or useful products at the expense of the majority of the people - and the nation as a whole.
In addition:
Colonialistic exploitation by rich countries.
Tariff walls put up by the rich countries against imports.
Rich countries giving subsidies to their own industry.
Lack of education of populations to control their leaders.
