Sadly, they are becoming more similar.

In general, Americans tend to fear their government, and see it as the only possible entity that can limit individual freedom and liberty.

In Canada we have traditionally believed that government is the only entity that can maintain individual freedom in the face of corporate hegemony and the inequalities inherent in the capitalist system. However, many current politicians, particularly conservatives, are trying to convince Canadians that they can't trust government, but can trust business.

In practical terms, Canada follows a Westminster style of parliament, where the Prime Minister is a member of parliament, and must answer to its members and maintain their confidence. The United States has a bicameral ledgislature with a separate executive branch, the President, who does not require the confidence of the ledgislature. Canadian elections are held at the discretion of the Prime Minister or immediately following a vote in which confidence is not maintained. Certain issues, such as budgets, are always confidence issues. In the United States, elections are held on a fixed schedule.

And of course, the biggest practical difference is that we have four political parties in Parliment, and at least one other that routinely captures enough popular vote to qualify for funding recognition. The United States only has two parties, which often seem very similar to outsiders.
