A lot of people believe that the first Horror movie ever made was called Le Manoir du Diable (that's French for The House of the Devil) which was made by
Georges Melies in 1896.
Although, as far as I know, the first horror movie was actually called The Execution of Mary Stewart made by none other than Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, phonograph, and the motion picture camera. The movie was based on a true story which was the execution of Mary Stuarts, who was executed on January 24, 1567. She was executed for treason.
The movie only lasts about fifteen seconds. It shows a crowd of people gathered around waiting to see her beheaded. Strangely, Mary willingly places her head on the chopping block. The executioner then chops off her head with an axe. At the end the executioner, looking confused, looks straight at the camera. He reaches for the body then turns to the head, and grabbing it he lifts it, then showing it to the camera.
The first vampire movie was a silent film released in 1913 called The Vampire. The first Dracula movie was called Nosferatu and released in 1922. Nosferatu created some of the characteristics that modern day vampires have been modeled after, so the film The Vampire contains a different sort of vampire than people are used to.

The Twilight novel was published in 2005 and The Vampire Diaries first novel, The Awakening, was published in 1999, so The Vampire Diaries novels came before Twilight. But, Twilight, the movie, premiered in 2008 and The Vampire Diaries television series premiered in 2009. So technically, The Vampire Diaries novels came before Twilight novels, but Twilight beat The Vampire Diaries to the punch with a film first.
