There wasn't really a "good" side or a "bad" side it was a war to rescue Helen of Troy since Paris stole her so technically you could say the Greeks were the good side because they were trying to get back Helen and the other kings joined in because of an agreement they signed when the Greek king married her.
Courage is the a major theme of the Trojan War as presented by Homer. These people were a warrior society and expected their warriors to be a highly individualistic group of men who were jelouse of their honor and ready to fight for what they considered their best interests. Achilles was the most violent in combat and the most emotional in council. Only after losing his best friend and meeting the father of the Trojan Prince whom he had killed in revenge did he realize the tragedy of all their brief lives fighting for no great cause. As with other warriors of the time, he was expected to acquire wisdom if he survived the battles he fights as a young man.
