The Human Blockhead is an old sideshow stunt which had it's beginnings in antiquiety; believed to have come from India. In English conjuring literature Philip Butterworth in hisMagic on the Early English Stage points out that the first mention of the trick came in Cardano's De rervm varieatate in 1557 when a young Irish juggler "inserted two small knives directly into his nostrils to such an extent that they projected perpendicular to his face." (Butterworth, 162) The use of knives, bodkins and other items of self mutilation have been a staple in English conjuring dating to the first book to describe conjuring tricks in English, Scot's The Discovery of Witchcraft, in which Scot illustrates with several woodcuts.
The term "Human Blockhead" is a modern day name created by Melvin Burkhart (1907-2001). Burkhart was a sideshow performer know as the "Anatomical Wonder" because of the stunts he could pull off using only his body. (Hartzman, 129) According to Marc Hartzman in his book American Sideshow, Burkhart discovered that objects could be inserted into the nose when he underwent nasal surgery. That is the time he started inserting nails in his nose and calling the act the "Human Blockhead."
