Longfellow seems to have invented all the characters in his poem. By using the term 'Emperor of Allemaine' he puts the story in the period of The (Germanic) Holy Roman Empire, 962-1806. The poem's imagery suggests a setting around the time of the Crusades (11th-13th century). There never was an emperor called Valmond, or anything like it, however. Nor was there a King of Sicily called Robert, though there were three in the 11th-12th centuries called Roger. The first had a famous elder brother called Robert; they were Normans, who conquered Sicily. There were several Popes called Urban. Urban II (reigned 1088-99) was not related to Roger of Sicily, but was closely allied to him, and conferred exceptional prerogatives on him, such as appointing bishops and collecting church revenues. So that would appear a likely setting for Longfellow's fantasy. The emperor at the time was Henry IV; he was not so friendly with the pope, in fact there would remain open hostility between popes and emperors for centuries. A curious parallel to the poem is the play 'Enrico IV' by Pirandello. In it an actor is injured in a fall and comes to believing himself to be the Emperor Henry IV; a rich relation plays a trick on him, humouring his delusion for 20 years. The play was written in 1921, almost sixty years after Longfellow published The Sicilian's Tale in 'Tales of a Wayside Inn'.
