Kachina dolls represent spirit beings or something from the natural world that can include, but not limited to, an element, a natural event, or an ancestor. The dolls are given to children to protect and respect. It is believed that if one respects and cares for the Kachina that it can use its power to do good for humankind. The Kachinas are used by the Zuni, Pueblo and Hopi tribes.

They are tribal property and thus not usually for sale.
Probably not. Katchina dolls were used by American Indians. They have various types of masks, helmets, etc often animistic. They are portative and sometimes considered portable totem poles- not entirely true but a good simile. Katchina is, and I should emphasize this, NOT a tribe, unlike Apache, Cherokee, Cayuse, etc. ( cayuse is also a breed of horse!)
In a nutshell- anthropomorphic ( human formed) or zoomorphic ( animal-like) portable dolls. they are sometimes incorrectly-but it is a flag of convenience- ( Portable totem poles) they are quite distinct- but are American Indian in origin. Kachina, sometimes spelled Katchina- is NOT a tribe. There is or was a Katchina Doll 200 women"s Air Race- a Katchina doll is a prize. Be advised Amelia Earhart"s family had connections with the A.T.S.F. railway- which may explain this, and her predilection for Turquoise.
Santeria and Voodoo are two distinct religious practices, but have some aspects in common. as you mentioned dolls one can draw an analogy between totem poles- which are physically static structures- some have movable wings for thunderbirds, etc, and the anthropomorphic but diminutive Katchina ( sometimes spelled Kachina) dolls. they are two different tribal customs. The Katchina dolls are NOT portative totem poles, or something akin to wearable crosses or scapulars.
One belief of the pueblo's were they believed that kachina dolls had the power to bring rain and good harvest. Katchina masks were worn during scard dances
The Pueblo Indians believed that the katchina (their name for god(s) as they had several) controlled everything in life. When an individual put on the garments and head of one of the katchina, in a spiritual sense he became that katchina. Such observances were held at certain times of the year to bring the people together to pray for the things needed for life. Some of the katchina represent different aspects of ourselves, for example the "clown" who will go around teasing people and just generally clowning around: the purpose of this particular katchina is to remind us not to take ourselves too seriously, but rather to find humor in all aspects of life.
No, but as with any Tribal society- or societies, there are plenty of odd cultural practices which might be confused with Voodoo. For example Katchina, also spelled Kachina.. Kachina ( pronounced roughly Catch-china!) means approximately human spirit body or soul-mate. they took the form of more-or-less anthropomorphic dolls and were a sort of mixture of charm-companion and boogeyman. they somewhat resembled the images on totem poles and are infrequently called ( Totem pole dolls) which is incorrect. there were zoomorphic decorations and designs on the helmets or hats ( well, we have the American Eagle on Garrison hats, right/) These dolls, called katchinas, were most popular in the Southwest and some were sold in souvenir shops off the Santa Fe railroad line. For some reason (maybe the fact that founder of the 99"s, Amelia Earhart , was the daughter of a Santa Fe executive, the idea took-off ( no pun intended) with the women fliers and they had a Katchina Doll 200 mile air race, and so on. Katchina dolls were prizes used. Katchina is not voodoo but the doll angle, well, perhaps a kindred spirit, but not really, Back in the sixties when Indian lore was a popular subject in magazine articles, stuff on the Katchina flourished- by the way it is NOT as tribe.. different tribes used them, mostly in the ATSF line area- a lot of ground!
They are an American Indian custom. Something akin to a portative totem pole and/ore Boogeyman character, there are both good and ( Hexy) Katchinas. Katchina, or Kachina, is NOT a tribe, as some have erroneously reported ( I think Herr Von Daniken seems to think they are a tribe akin to Cherokee, Apache, Zuni, etc. They are not. A stuffed (I would assume) Katchina doll is or was used as a prize for a race meeting called the Kathina Doll 200 by the National Association of Women ( air) pilots- popularily called the ninety-Nines. These were custom-made for the air show, so to speak and are not toy store items. Katchina dolls are and were made on Indian reservations.
Most people that honestly use voodoo dolls will make them their self to suit their intended purpose.
It was/is a Tribal custom of the Paiute or Sioux Indians, even the skeptical occut scholar and science-fiction writer admits it was A(an Invention of sorts) I believe one Tr8ibal chieftain or Medicine man was the principal architect. The American Indians did not use the phrase (Witch Doctor) but did have Shamans and Tribal medicine men steeped in Occult practices such as Totem Poles and the oddly portative Kachina Dolls used in Santa Fe territory and often confused with Totem Poles. the Kachina Dolls also spelled Katchina (nothing to do with the Ghost-Dance ritual) were associated with children in some tribes. among the tribes who used them, Katchina Dolls were buried with children who died young so there is a spirtual angle. I believe the katchina doll which usually had a helmet or headgear was placed at a diagonal angle(somewhat akin to GSA flag salute) across the body of the dead child. I hyave neber seen an American Indian funeral , so this is speculative.
The purpose of porcelain is to look pretty. Porcelain is often used in pianos keys, dolls, and items not meant to be played with.
