What were the stones like? It is unlikely they were mere pebbles the size of grapes or olives. Slingstones have been found that are from 2 to 3 inches [5 to 8 cm] in diameter, the size of a small orange. A slinger could fling such a stone at speeds of from 100 to 150 miles per hour [160 to 240 km/hr].

There are three varying interpretations for the reason David selected 5 smooth stones.

  • First, Goliath had four brothers and David was preparing to take out the entire family.
  • Second, five in biblical numerology represents Grace. Thus, David faced Goliath with Grace.
  • Third, David carried the Name of Jesus (J-e-s-u-s) with him, based on the old song, "Take the Name of Jesus With You".
I doubt the third has any theological significance, but I wasn't there the day he killed Goliath.

The Scripture states that David picked up five nameless smooth stones (1 Samuel 17:40), but it was just 'astone', not multiple stones, which killed Goliath and not his decapitating him with his own sword as some believe:

1 Samuel 17:49-51

New King James Version (NKJV)

49 Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung itand struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. 50So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there wasno sword in the hand of David.51 Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it.

And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

Repeating that he killed him and cut off his head is the decisive sign to all that the challenger was indeed dead. The surrounding armies could not ascertain otherwise. It filled the Philistines with terror.

According to the Bible what weapons was the Philistine giant Goliath carrying when he was slain by David?

1 Samuel 17:7 says that Goliath carried a spear that was like a weaver's beam, when he was killed by David. This description was the same as the spear that Goliath was carrying when Elhanan killed him, in 2 Samuel 21:19 (The Hebrew Bible in English, JPS 1917 Edition), although the King James Version renders this as the brother of Goliath, with "the brother of " in italics to show that it was not a true translation.

Moral lesson in the story of David and Goliath?

The main point in my opinion is that when a man mocks God, he is destined for a fall. David was content in his victory, because he knew that God was fighting for him. So why five stones? Because Goliath had four brothers, who were giants also.

Who became jealous of David when he defeated Goliath?

David's father sent him with a gift to his older brothers who were serving in the Israelite army. On arriving, David was shocked to hear the taunts of the Philistine giant, Goliath. Day after day this Goliath blasphemously and contemptuously challenges Israel to choose a man and let him come out and fight, but none reply. Saul quakes in his tent. However, David comes to hear the Philistine's taunts. With righteous indignation and inspired courage, David exclaims: "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he has to taunt the battle lines of the living God?" (17:26) Rejecting Saul's armor because he had never tried it before, David goes out to do battle, equipped only with a shepherd's staff, a sling, and five smooth stones. Regarding a match with this young shepherd boy as beneath his dignity, Goliath calls down evil on David. (1 Samuel 17:1-44)

What did David use to kill Goliath?

"There are other inconsistencies as well. For example, in 1 Samuel 17, David is credited with killing the giant Goliath. But in 2 Samuel 21:19, Elhanan, son of Jaareoregim, is credited with the act. Another point to mention is that if you look in the popular King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, and turn to 2 Samuel 21:19, you will see "the brother of" (Goliath) in italics. This italic print means that it was an embellishment of the editor of the KJV, in an attempt to cover up this inconsistency (by making it appear that Elhanan killed the brother of Goliath, as opposed to Goliath himself). But if you look in a reputable version of the Bible, such as the New English Bible, you will see the original rendition: that Elhanan killed Goliath... an obvious contradiction." Who killed Goliath?David killed him twice. (Once with a sling and once with a sword.) ; 1 Samuel 17:49-50 : David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. ; 1 Samuel 17:51 : David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. ; Elhanan ;; 2 Samuel 21:19 : And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam. [The words "the brother of" were inserted by the KJV translators to avoid the obvious contradiction with 1 Samuel 17:49-51.] ; Hey guys. Before this goes any further, go and look up the word Anakim in your bible. they were an entire race of giants ::: At a later point in time David kills six(?) more giants..."Inconsistencies" such as whether David or Elhanan killed Goliath, and whether "the brother of" was inserted as a "cover-up", can be quickly resolved with a simple reading of a parallel passage, 1 Chronicles, 20:5, which says that Elhanan "killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath". What we have is a copying error, where "the brother of" was mistakenly omitted from the original. The King James writers were correct to insert it into 1 Samuel. No contradiction, no inconsistency. Simple reason and a little Bible knowledge will clear all of these types of things up.thebrotherjohn response:1 Samuel 17:40And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.Ephesians 4:11And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers.:0) I enjoy this passage because the five smooth stones represent the ascension ministries washed by the water of the word and holy ghost, taken from the brook.I don't know which ministry killed Goliath but i bet it was the evangelist because Goliath wasn't even saved lol.

How big was the stone David used to kill Goliath?

The Bible makes no mention of the actual size of the stones in which David took to defeat Goliath. It only states that he took five stones from a brook. It is obvious that they could not have been too large, as they were used in a hand held sling.1 Samuel also states that the stone itself is not the cause of Goliaths death but David instead slew Goliath using Goliaths own sword.According to 1 Samuel 17: 49David put his hand in his bag and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. In the verse 51 it states thatDavid ran, and stood upon the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of the sheath, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith.Verse 51 clearly states that David actually "slew" (killed) Goliath with his own sword, the stone hit Goliath in the forehead cause him to fall and apparently knocked unconscious.

Why david use 5 stones only?

Some believe it is because Goliath had three brothers and a father still living. They believe David knew he would probably have to kill the whole family. [Back in those times the laws of an eye for an eye etc... were used and it would have been within the right of the family [Goliath's] to obtain vengeance against David.]But, could it really be that David was so confident and faithful to God that he picked up a stone for each remaining giant just in case they wanted revenge? Why not? However, the question comes to mind, "Do we have any indications that David, the keeper of sheep, knew anything about Goliath beyond his defiance of the Lord and the armies of Israel?"Therefore, there are also some who believe David picked up five stones because the number five in Scripture is the number of grace.David is the type of Christ and by His grace He will slay all the Goliaths in our lives IF we trust Him by faith.

Why did David have 5 stones and what did they mean in 1 Samuel 17?

David took 5 stones in case he missed with the first one. David had his staff, also, that he used proficiently as a shepherd. He had used it against bears and lions in the past [verses 34-35]. This club was a weapon used in-close. But lions and bears don't wield huge spears and swords that can kill from a distance... and David was no fool. David never would have gotten inside Goliath's spear, javelin and sword with his staff [club], even if he had gotten past Goliath's shield-bearer who went out in front of Goliath [verse 41]. So the five smooth stones merely meant that David was improving his odds against all the obstacles in his way. But the first small missile found its way, not THROUGH the spear, sword, javelin... and shield-bearer... but ABOVE THEM ALL. Given Goliath's towering height, David had a clear shot at Goliath's forehead with a small stone that he probably didn't see coming! Goliath only noticed David's shepherd's staff: "Am I a dog... that you come at me with a stick?..." (verse 43 NLT New Living Translation). And discounted his sling [if he even took notice of it in the first place]. All David wanted to do was stun Goliath and knock him down with the stones, so he could then quickly advance on Goliath while he was down at ground level and lop his head off with his own sword! [verses 50-51]
