What is the movie splash about?

The plot of splash is surrounded by a young boy who is rescued by a mermaid off the cost of Cape Cod. When he returns to the same location years late he once again falls into the sea by the same mermaid. The mermaid then attempts to search for the young boy in New York by sprouting legs when her tail dries. When she finds the boy they fall in love, but she fears how he will react when he finds out she is not human.
